Common law blunders and how to avoid them:

• Don't mow the grass to short. Follow the 1/3 rule. It's better to mow more frequently than to cut too much in a single pass.
• Don't water in the evening. Water at night can promote fungus. Watering at midday is inefficient because much of the water evaporates before it can be absorbed. Watering in the morning is ideal.
• Don't stop watering newly seeded grass to soon.
• Don't apply a major herbicide too soon after seeding.
• Don't suffocate, aerate.
• Don't let thatch build up.
• Don't plant the wrong seed in the wrong spot.
• Don't use an inadequate fertilizer program.
• Don't stop watering.

Fertilizer 101

Now that you have Seed mix, it's time to choose the right type of fertilizer. Up, Down, All Around. They Represent three nutrients essential to strong, healthy turf grass: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium or potash.

Test, don't guess. There's simply no substitute for a soil test. Soil testing identifies what the soil needs and doesn't need, such as more lime or less potassium. It offers clues as to which seeds and fertilizer will give customers the best results. It only takes minutes, but the benefits last all season long. Emphasize this to your customers. Explain the testing process and show them the testing kits you offer.
